Recertification Overview

The below information applies to all CPS and CPPS who are not included in the 2021 recertification exemption detailed towards the bottom of this page.

CPS and CPPS must recertify every two years and document completion of no fewer than 20 hours of continuing educaiton in specific topic areas. For Certified Peer Specialists (CPS):

As a Certified Peer Specialist you will need need to submit your recertification application by August 30th in the year in which your certification expires. The year of expiration is noted on your physical certificate from the state.

CPS Recertification Process

  1. Complete the online Application for Recertification (click here) by the recertification deadline.
  2. Fill out and mail in the Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) Continuing Education Hours Report to UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education by the recertification deadline.
  3. Along with the Continuing Education Hours Report, include a check or money order payment of the $50 recertification fee to UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education.

Note: The above process is subject to change as UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education works to enable online payments alongside the ability to report continuing education hours in the online Application for Recertification.

For Certified Parent Peer Specialists (CPPS):

As a Certified Parent Peer Specialist you will need to submit your recertification application by January 30th in the year in which your certification expires. The year of expiration is noted on your physical certificate from the state.

  1. Complete the online Application for Recertification (click here) by the recertification deadline.
  2. Fill out and mail in the Certified Parent Peer Specialist (CPPS) Continuing Education Hours Report to UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education by the recertification deadline.
  3. Along with the Continuing Education Hours Report, include a check or money order payment of the $50 recertification fee to UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education.

Final COVID-19 related Recertification Exemption – Updated May 18th, 2021

The Division of Care and Treatment Services (DCTS) has announced a final set of COVID-19 related exemptions regarding recertification for Certified Peer Specialists (CPS) and Certified Parent Peer Specialists (CPPS) as of May 18th, 2021.

The following groups are impacted by this final exemptions letter:

  1. CPS due to recertify in Summer 2021
  2. CPPS due to recertify in Summer of 2021
  3. CPS who missed the February 28th, 2021 recertification deadline extension

Exemption Summary:

All CPS and CPPS in the three groups above are considered still actively certified by DCTS until August 30th, 2021. They will still be required to apply for recertification to be certified past August 30th, 2021. The deadline for submitting the application for recertification for these groups will be August 30th, 2021.

The following changes have been made for those in the three groups above:

  1. CPS and CPPS in the above groups will fill out and submit the Application for Recertification (click here) by 11:59pm CDT on Monday, August 30th, 2021.
  2. DCTS is offering a one-time waiver of the continuing education hours requirements for those in the above groups.
  3. CPS and CPPS in the above groups will not be required to pay the recertification fee if an applicant for recertification indicates on the Application for Recertification they they cannot pay the fee. In this case, the $50 recertification fee will be payed to UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education by DCTS on the applicant’s behalf.
  4. All CPS recertifying on August 30, 2021, will receive a new certificate from DCTS with an expiration date of August 30, 2023.
  5. All CPPS recertifying on August 30, 2021, will receive a new certificate from DCTS with an expiration date of January 30, 2023.

DCTS Cannot Offer Refunds or Reimbursement of Recertification Fees Already Payed:

The exemption regarding DCTS payment of recertification fees outlined in the DCTS letter unfortunately cannot be extended to CPS and CPPS in groups 1 and 2 above who have already payed the recertification fee. Additionally, DCTS cannot refund the recertification fees for those CPS who recertified on February 28th, 2021.
