Strengthening Families through Parent Peer Support

FACILITATORS:

Shirley Drake is Project Director for Peer Specialists Limited (PSL). PSL provides engagement and advocacy services for families enrolled in Childrens Mental Health and Wraparound system of care. PSL works closely with families within the Wraparound and the provider network to provide monthly educational offerings for parent advocacy and group support. She is a Certified Peer Specialist and State Trainer. She is also a member of the Milwaukee County Mental Health Board representing the peer voice on budgetary decisions.

 

 

April Luderus is a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) in Wisconsin and serve as Wraparound Advocacy and Engagement Program Manager for Peer Specialists Limited, a peer-run, peer-led agency in Milwaukee. April is passionate and committed to using her lived experience and peer training to reach back and grab the hands of those desiring a self-led life of recovery. Before beginning work as a Certified Peer Specialist and Recovery Navigator with WCS in April of 2022, April was a teacher of high school students with special needs and Library Media Specialist for grades K-8 in Milwaukee Public Schools. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Communications specializing in Multi-Cultural Communication from UW-Milwaukee. She is a mother of 5, grandmother of almost 10 and a member of a cultivated support system in the community.

SESSION ONE: Sept. 14th from 2PM-3:30PM CT
  • “Family Engagement”

Objective:

    • Learn how Parent Peer Specialists can “coach” parents to be engaged
SESSION TWO: Sept. 15th from 2PM-3:30PM CT
  • “Five Protective Factors Framework in Strengthening Families”

Objectives:

    • Resilience
    • Social Connections
    • Knowledge of parenting a child with developing needs
    • How to access concrete support in times of need
    • Social and emotional connections that allow families and children thrive
SESSION THREE: Sept. 18th from 2PM-3:30PM CT
  • “Support for the Parent Peer Specialist”

Objectives:

    • Defining the wellness needs of Parent Peer Specialist
    • Family Feedback and why it’s important
    • Strength-based Supervision
