Inclusion of Peer Support in Community Integrated Based Services Why Peer Specialists are Important to Recovery Services ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ |
Examples of where Certified Peer Specialists are making a difference:
|
Research and positive results on improved recovery and financial outcomes for employers and consumers A 2008 study in the American Journal of Psychiatric Rehabilitation states that based on the existing research concerning consumer provider (CP) outcomes, the inclusion of a Peer Specialist as a team member may ultimately result in improved client outcomes for the entire team. (Schmidt et al. Comparison of service outcomes of Case Management Teams with and without a Consumer Provider. American Journal of Psychiatric Medicine 11:321-329, 2008.)
Providing Certified Peer Specialists services to consumers also produces positive financial outcomes for the employer and consumer. Dumont and Jones studied 25 New York Consumers with DSM-III R (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition) diagnosis who were randomly assigned access to inpatient Peer Support or traditional care. They found that, over just one year, the test groups average cost for their expanded set of services was $4,831 less per person than the cost of the control groups with standard care. The traditional care hospital stay averaging 8-10 days was reduced to 4-5 days. (Dumont & Jones. Findings from a Consumer/Survivor Defined Alternative to Psychiatric Hospitalization. Outlook Spring, 2008.) |
